" Sustainability should be second nature to our business practices and intent. " M3D strives to help others achieve this goal. That's our vocation and our expertise.
I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do. ~Edward Everett Hale
I chose this quote to start the conversation on “The Power of One.” I think in our current society we do not understand our full power and how our choices can change economies. We live in a society of that is powered by large business, money and products. Products are in everything we touch, see and live. From our clothing to our homes to our food, it is what drives economies. Over the past few years we keep hearing, all over the news, that to get us out of the recession we need to have the American public shopping again. The more we shop helps to create stability in our countries economic security. So let’s take this and look at it in a different light and see where our power is.
We need to understand that we as consumers have the influence to make change. It does not matter who you are and what is your financial situation, we all have a voice with the choices we make. The choices we make in our purchasing will make a difference on all aspects of our lives and that we all have the power to make change happen. It is like a domino effect and if we all take a vow to follow this path change will come fast. It’s all about advocacy for healthier products that are also environmentally conscious. Thinks about this, if all of us, individually, decide we will not purchase products that have harmful chemicals (from food to building materials to accessories, etc.) and support more the companies that are doing the right thing, then other companies will have to follow the right path to get our money; from there more companies will start to follow this path as they see this is what we want and if they have these products it will increase the bottom line. Think about going to the store and not have to think about what chemical is in your food that can harm your family and just feel free to buy products. We need to start telling our society at large that it is not OK…
This type of thinking of purchasing power is not only for individuals, think of how we as leaders, business owners, designers, architects, facilities and purchasing departments can influence this change. When companies also take on this Power and say we will only buy products and services of others that have these qualities, change will come faster. It is amazing how the bottom line effects change and it is time all of us see that the triple bottom line (People, Planet, and Profit) is what we need business to always look to.
A good friend, Ana Serra, and I entered our video on the subject for a contest for EAANYC, the theme is about our buying power. The video is called “The Power of One” with the main theme being “Your Choice has a Voice”. We simplified the message to have it directed at children and adults alike. We wanted to take this powerful message and make it lighter, educational for all. Here is the link, I hope you enjoy it and share this message! The Power of One.Tweet
